Drinking Water Week: May 6 - 12, 2012

Drinking Water Week (May 6-12) is a great time to highlight some of the work being done in Saskatoon by citizens who are “Celebrating the Essential!” Through their work and volunteerism, these water stewards in our community are acknowledging the vital importance that safe, reliable drinking water plays in all of our daily lives.

South Saskatchewan River Watershed Stewards
The South Saskatchewan River Watershed Stewards is a grassroots, community driven, non-profit organization working within the watershed to implement programs and initiatives that will protect our water resource. One of their current projects focuses on reducing the impact of agriculture on local waterways.

The Saskatchewan Watershed Authority
The Saskatchewan Watershed Authority leads management of the province's water resources to ensure safe drinking water sources and reliable water supplies for economic, environmental and social benefits for Saskatchewan people. Take their Water Wise Quiz to see how much water you’re using in your home and yard!

The Council of Canadians
The Council of Canadians works to promote progressive policies on clean water, fair trade, energy security, public health care, and other issues of social and economic concern to Canadians. The recently developed Saskatoon Chapter is working towards bringing the Blue Communities Project to Saskatoon. Blue Communities recognize water as a human right, promote public water services, and prohibit the sale of bottled water in public facilities and at municipal events.

The Saskatchewan Environmental Society
The Saskatchewan Environmental Society has been committed to watershed protection and water quality issues for a number of years. Currently, they’re working with other organizations in the province, including the Prairie Water Directive, to ensure the sustainability of our water supply.

Let’s take a moment to celebrate the essential work being done in our community to help ensure we have access to high quality drinking water!
